Hugh McFee /McPhee

M, b. circa 1802, d. after 1858
Hugh McFee /McPhee I first located Hugh McPhee and his wife Marion in the 1841 census of Paisley, Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Hugh was a copperus laborer. They were both 30 years old and Hugh was listed as not born in the county. They lived at 23 Levern, Copperas Works, in the village of Nitshill. Copperas is a green vitriol or ferous sulphate, a product of copper, and it is used in the dyeing of the paisley shawls the area was famous for. Levern is a parish formed in 1834 from Abbey, comprising the villages of Crossmill, Dovehill, Hurlet and Nitshill. Their marriage banns were proclaimed 15 August 1830. They were married August 31, 1830 by Rev. Walter Blair of Paisley. They said they were both of the parish. In the 1851 census of Abbey Paisley they were living at 5 New Smithhill and Hugh was a boatman at that time. In this census, Hugh was listed as born in Abbey Renfrew. Marion died sometime between 1851 and 1858 when their son, Hugh, married in Bathgate, Linlithgow. It was stated that she was deceased on his marriage certificate. I could find no civil registration for her death between 1855 and 1858, so I assume she died before 1855 when the registrations began to be recorded. There are no deaths available for Abbey, Paisley, Renfrew. He was born circa 1802 at Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland; from 1851 census. Angus Baxter says the age given in the 1851 census should be the exact year. While the age in the 1841 census is rounded to the closest 5.

Hugh McFee /McPhee married Marion Fleming, daughter of William Fleming and Elisabeth Findlay, on 31 August 1830 at Paisley Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland; Film 102051, LDS, Church records Vol 8 Marriages 1820-1844.

Hugh McFee /McPhee was Copperus Laborer circa 1841.

Hugh McFee /McPhee died after 1858.

Marion Fleming was born on 16 September 1810 at Paisley Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland; Film 102050, Index of Births, Paisley Abbey, Renfrew, LDS Church. We have since discovered that the age in the 1841 Scotland census goes to the nearest 5 years. She said she was born in 1810. In the 1851 census she says she was age 45. That census is supposed to give the age exactly. So she probably was not the Marion Fleming born in 1810. She was the daughter of William Fleming and Elisabeth Findlay.1

Marion Fleming married Hugh McFee /McPhee on 31 August 1830 at Paisley Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland; Film 102051, LDS, Church records Vol 8 Marriages 1820-1844.

Marion Fleming died before 1855; probably between 1851 census and 1858 marriage record for son Hugh.

John McFee died; living in England in 1909, per Angus' obit. He was born circa 1830 at Nitshill, Paisley Abbey, Levern. He was the son of Hugh McFee /McPhee and Marion Fleming. John McFee John possibly married Margaret Crossman, a Catholic, in 1846 in Scotland. However. he, according to what I can find, would have been under 20 years old. The notice says they were both from Nitshill. Could there have been another family, such as a brother of Hugh, living there too. on 14 January 1846 at Nitshill, Paisley, Abbey, Renfrew, Scotland.1

John McFee married Margaret ? after 1870. John McFee appeared on the census of 1881 at 39 Graham St., West Calder, Edinburgh, Scotland.2
